Coherix (Michigan, US), which develops and manufactures high-speed, high-definition 3D machine vision products, has launched a new solution for inline high-speed precision measurement in the automotive industry.
Called Robust3D, the volume measurement solution leverages the Coherix proprietary Tru3D sensor to establish a 3D “as-built” model of the volume area (between the top rim and the wavy bowl surface for diesel pistons, or the engine head deck face and the wavy combustion chamber surface for gas engine heads), and then precisely measure the volume against part tolerance.
The solution is also capable of profile measurement on the bowl surface, which is the fundamental contributor to bowl volume variation.

Compared with traditional methods, it’s fast and takes up very little floor space. The 3D data can be archived for 3D traceability in the future.
